Rumours on the age of consent changing are false – Clare Laxton Policy and Parliamentary Manager for Brook and FPA explains why:
“We’ve noticed over the past couple of days that rumours have started circulating online and on Twitter that the age of sexual consent is being lowered to 14.
“In England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland the age of consent is set by law. So it would take legislative changes (i.e. a bill going through Parliament) to change it. This hasn’t happened. And importantly we’re not aware of any proposals to do so.
“So the age of consent throughout the UK for everyone is still 16 years old and we can’t imagine any circumstances when it would change.”
